Ekadzati : “The Natural Humming of the Dakinis Within Mount Sumeru”

… available on Milam Records.

Zareen / Portland, USA

“…if, when the ears are cupped with the fingers, the humming sound which is normally present is absent, this is called the ‘interruption of the natural sound of the dakinis from within Mount Sumeru,’ and it indicates that one may die…” (Bardo Thodöl)

Lithops : “Noise Room video”

… from the “Noise Room” sound project at the Cubitt Gallery in London from August through September 2008.

Jan St. Werner / Germany

“I always try to create non-personal music. I try to handle sounds in the best possible way to let them expand, interfere with other sounds, mutate or even be dysfunctional. I try to make music which challenges my perceptional conventions. I guess these presumptions are completely personal but my intention is to overcome the cliché of making other people hear “my song”. I rather make music which completely merges with its environment – not in a sense of ambient discreetness but as a maximum awareness for the situation in which the music is being performed.”

… from Adventura Anatomica (2006)

Q: Is there anything in particular that draws you to the voice as an instrument?

A: The voice was a natural choice for me when I wanted to make my own sound. I have always used the voice, I have been singing my whole life, and it’s an immediate tool for expression. It is also an interesting door-opener to a world of narratives and language and lots of bastard forms of these combined with music.

Q. Your work is like a “great wall of sound.”

MENCHE: I don’t like walls … They are the enemy to freedom. So if anything I want my music to be quite the opposite – monolithic and towering, if anything. Absolute freedom without any barriers or walls is the sound world I want to be in.
